Un Río en el Río is a research, art, and environmental action collective that emerged in Monterrey as a response of resistance to the destruction of the Santa Catarina River, threatened by urbanization and mobility projects and the construction of a second level on the river. The collective is made up of artists, biologists, researchers, and citizens committed to defending the riverbed against deforestation and urbanization policies that reduce it under the pretext of preventing non-existent floods.
Since its founding, Un Río en el Río has worked to reimagine the river as a living, political territory in resistance, coordinating environmental documentation practices, community action, political advocacy, and legal-environmental tools. Through walks, recordings, workshops, public complaints, and collaborative processes, the collective builds critical awareness of the ecological deterioration and urban conflicts that affect the river landscape.
Its lines of work include ecological observation and restoration of the riverbed, preserving its memory, and producing pieces that link art, science, environmental law, and activism. Made up of various collaborators, the collective includes the participation of biologist and sound artist Antonio Hernández Ramírez, who contributes the scientific, ecological, and legal dimensions of the river's defense and restoration processes.
Antonio Hernández Ramírez He is a biologist, environmental researcher, and sound artist originally from Monterrey, Mexico. He directs projects for the restoration of burned forests, the recovery of degraded rivers, and the rehabilitation of wetlands in the northeast of the country, integrating science, land management, and community action. His work focuses on landscape conservation, air quality, and the defense of ecosystems against urbanization, mobility, and double-decker highway projects that threaten and invade the living structure of the Santa Catarina River and other ecological areas in the Monterrey metropolitan region.
As a member of Un Río en el Río, he participates in environmental resistance and sound creation processes in response to the destruction and fragmentation of the riverbed, driven by local governments. Based on this experience, in 2025 he launched the ephemeral project Central Electrónica, a platform for sound experimentation on the territory, ruin, and persistence of water.
