…porros, paseos, cumbia sabanera, cumbia tropical, vallenatos…
About this playlist
𝔏𝔞 ℑ𝔫𝔡𝔢𝔭𝔢: ℜ𝔢𝔦𝔫𝔬 ℭ𝔬𝔩𝔬𝔪𝔟𝔦𝔞 🪗 a playlist curated by Yasodari Sánchez, an artist and documentary filmmaker who investigates public space, migration, and the sonidero movement at the neighbourhood La Independencia in Monterrey, Nuevo León.
This playlist originates from the sounds of the streets of La Independencia, composed of migrants from central Mexico, and a famous neighbourhood for their musical movement related to the accordion and their connections with Colombian music and folklore. These practices have defined a unique aesthetic, diverse dances, movements, and collaborations, such as 'cumbia rebajada', honoring the airs of vallenato, or dancing to the rhythms of gavilán, motoneta, and suelto.
Yasodari shares a selection of songs by Colombian authors that served as hymns for the neighbouring, as well as previously unreleased compositions by composers and musicians from the colonia Independencia, spanning different generations and various Colombian genres, including porros, paseos, cumbia sabanera, cumbia tropical, and vallenato. The playlist also features songs with women’s names, a reflection of how both the musical genre and the naming of girls and women continue to shape the identity of the neighborhood today.
Thanks Yasodari for taking me back to Monterrey with this beautiful project 🪗 🇨🇴⛰️
