A playlist of lencha music by Yorely Valero.

Maricona, bollera, tortillera, tamalera, trailera or lencha are some of the ways in which lesbian, bisexual or pansexual women have been called in a derogatory way. However the queer community has been reversing the insult intention and vindicating the meaning of these words. As Paul Preciado would say: we must remember that behind every word there is a story, just as behind every story there is a battle to fight.

Yorely Valero

Yorely Valero was born in Colombia and has lived in Mexico City since 2019, where she finished the Educational Program of SOMA. With a background in visual arts, since she moved to Mexico her work has expanded to include interests in movement, the body, music, and collective practice. Yorely is part of Fauna, a contemporary movement and dance group; she helps to coordinate Fútbol, Sudor y Goce, a soccer training and play space for women and gender-diverse individuals; and launched La Estética Unisex, a queer hairdressing project, in 2022. She also began performing as DJ Arena in 2022. Each of these spaces—centered around community, gender, and collaborative work—shapes her practice. Yorely has received the Independent Editorial Projects Grant at the 45th Colombian National Artists' Salon, a Grant for Colombian Artists and Cultural Practitioners Abroad, and a residency at Lugar a Dudas in Cali, awarded by the Colombian Ministry of Culture. Her work has been shown in Colombia, Mexico, Ecuador, the Netherlands, and Panama.
