Sueños microfósiles

A queer micropaleontology project that explores interspecies diversity through geological time.

A playlist to reflect on human- fossil relations.

About this playlist

We journey from the sea to the mountains with 𝚂𝚞𝚎ñ𝚘𝚜 𝙼𝚒𝚌𝚛𝚘𝚏ó𝚜𝚒𝚕𝚎𝚜, a queer micropaleontology project that explores interspecies diversity through geological time. This project focuses on collaborative and artistic expressions—“forms, genres, and affections”—as traces of queer identity, using scientific methods and personal narratives as tools for knowledge-building. Developed within the Artistic Residency Program for Social Justice and Experimental Creation framework, Sueños Microfósiles was led by artist Melissa García alongside a group of participants. Together, they conducted field sessions in La Huasteca (Nuevo León, Mexico), where they collected samples and made significant discoveries. As part of the process, the Microfossil Dreams playlist was created—a collaborative piece titled Goodbye Songs, where the group marked the closure of each session and celebrated research milestones with a song to keep dreaming.

“As beings of this species and as queer beings, we can relate to these other beings of nature that have resisted scientific classification. In that resistance, we find a connection—one that challenges identification policies that not only limit our rights but also restrict the rights of nature itself.” —Melissa García

This project was made possible thanks to the support of Fundación FEMSA, Laboratorio de Arte A.C. del Tec de Monterrey, and Laboratorio Cultural Ciudadano LABNL. The working sessions took place at Laboratorio de Arte A.C., the Monterrey campus of Tec de Monterrey, LABNL, and the La Peña formation in the Huasteca Canyon of Santa Catarina, Nuevo León, Mexico, as well as the Micromechatronics Laboratory at Tec de Monterrey. It was developed with GeoLatinas (International Network of Latinas in Planetary Sciences), Chemistry Tech Microscopy Labs, and the Micromechatronics Lab of the Center for Advanced Technologies at Tec de Monterrey.
