About this playlist
Can songs act as gentle anchors that root you and give you a sense of belonging to a place? Can they protect us from the feeling of displacement, carry us from one territory to another, and anchor us to versions of ourselves in distant lands? In an intimate exercise, Peruvian ethnomusicologist Rodrigo Chocano shares the songs that, over the past decade, have allowed him to listen deeply to one land while moving through others. A journey through songs that bring him back to the lands he comes from and connect him to places that might seem foreign, yet have somehow become linked through music. Qawwali in Lima, tondero in Islamabad, timba in Austria, and Bollywood in Washington.
